Week 6 Notes Homework and Videos
NOTE 1: This week outside distractions can be used (weather permitting) on Sit on The Dog, Look, Send to Place (six foot leash held outside), Circle place (six foot leash or long line held outside), and Long Place (six foot leash held or long line outside). Use long line once you are comfortable that your dog can do all the exercises consistently and reliably (not perfect just meeting the goals) on the six foot leash. When you start the long line, do not let the whole thing out, but work it so you get to your goals a bit at a time as you let it out. You can always mark the leash with a piece of tape or chalk as to the last successful rep distance.
Calming and Chill Exercises (You can rotate these on different days OR YOU CAN DO TRANSITIONAL LEASH MOST OF THE DAYS, SINCE THAT IS NEW AND IMPORTANT):
- Sit on The Dog 30 plus minutes Goal: Having your dog go down in less than five minutes in moderate distracting environments (like your front lawn) BE DOING THIS OUTSIDE WHENEVER THE WEATHER PERMITS.
- Long Place 30 minutes Goal: Have your dog eventually be able to stay on their place for 30 minutes with the leash dropped. (You don't ever have to reset this one, but keep an eye on her so you can grab or step on the leash if you need to.) NOTE: I COULD NOT FIND A VIDEO ON THIS FOR LUNA AND IT MAY HAVE BEEN AN EXERCISE WE STARTED ON WEEK 2. IF WE HAVE NOT STARTED THE LONG PLACE DON'T WORRY ABOUT THIS !!
- Transitional Leash Work 30 plus minutes Goal: To just get her used to walking and stopping (sitting or going into a down when you stop) on the leash. DOING THIS INSIDE IS FINE, AND DOING THIS JUST IN YOUR YARD IS FINE TO START WITH.
- Sits with Interim Sit Correction 5 minutes Goal: To get three sets of four in a row sits (without needing the correction) within 2-3 minutes or less. (You can also do this with the lured heeling). Week 4: The goal is to do this without the interim correction within two-three minutes inside. NOTE: You can do this while you are working with lured heeling step 2. If you have to give her the interim correction, still give her a good girl and treat afterward for now.
- Circle Sit Stays 7 plus minutes Goal; To get four in a row for one minute working on getting distance outside on the long line.
- Send to Place with Lured Let's Go (Move towards me is the only meaning of "Let's Go") 5 plus minutes Goal: To get your dog follow you on loose leash for "Let's Go" command up to the place. Then for your to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets in 5 minutes (remember this is just a goal it may take you longer when you start). Week 4 Change: Make it more of a challenge by doing it outside when possible (using 6' leash held outside).
- Circle Place 5 minutes plus (when your are just working up to the minute maybe start at 15 reps once you get closer to 30 seconds you could work 5 minutes and then at 1 minute you are just working at getting to 4 1 min circle places in a row) Goal: To be able to perform 4 circle places in a row for one minute in 1 minute WITH THE LEASH DROPPED at more of a distance like to the end of the six foot leash eventually (remember that is just a goal, it may take you longer when you start). Week 4 Change: You can work this outside now on a 6' leash held outside.
- Recalls with Still Sit Stays from a Distance 7 plus minutes Goal: To get three sets of four in a row recalls or come. You should stagger the time in between the stay and the come commands. This way, Luna will not learn to anticipate the come command. The still sit stay will be at a little bit of a distance now, which is new. So keep these sit stays below 30 seconds when staggering the time. Week 5: Practice outside now.
- Lured Heel Step 2 10 minutes plus Goal: To have your dog walk in good position three to five steps and then sit when you stop. NOTE: YOU CAN WORK THIS WITH YOUR SITS FIRST COMMAND. YOU CAN WORK WITH THIS OUTSIDE NOW TOO, AND YOU COULD CALL THIS PART OF YOUR SIT FIRST COMMAND WORK AS WELL.
- Attention to Name Around Distractions 5 minutes Goal: To get 3 sets of 4 in a row looks in mid level distractions. Week 5 Change: Use outdoor distractions with this exercise too any chance that you can. (remember it is just a future goal, not something you should expect right away or even this week possibly). WEEK 5: KEEP UP WITH THE OUTSIDE PRACTICE.
